Book Name - Aghora (3 Vols.)

Author - Robert Svoboda

The Aghora books have been embraced world-wide for their frankness in broaching subjects generally avoided and their facility for making the "unseen" real. By story and living example the Aghori Vimalananda transports us into the true reality while stripping away the unreal. In the process of revealing essence behind substance, countless questions are answered for the spiritual aspirant.

This is a three volume set by the author

AGHORA, At the Left Hand of God

A rare view into the life of a practicing Tantric master. We are taken into realms of consciousness seldom visited yet clearly explained. Astounding tales by Vimalananda and his master yogi friends (one of whom has lived for centuries) reveal truths with eye opening clarity. Aghora teaches that the world is not as it seems, that reality is obtained by embracing the world rather than renouncing it; that by totally giving oneself to the Great Mother can we break through into the Light.

AGHORA II: Kundalini

Kundalini: the Force of forces, Mantra, Tantra, Yantra, the sacred fire, chakras and consciousness. "We Aghoris believe in using fast, terrifying methods of sadhana because we ache to return to God immediately; we cannot bear being separated from Him. An Aghori meditates on burning corpses to force the consciousness beyond all limitations of the personality. Aghora sadhanas destroy everything down to the ground of consciousness and rebuild from the bottom up. Then there is nothing to fear, because the new personality is engineered to be totally surrendered to the Will of God."

AGHORA III: The Law of Karma.

In this third volume of the Aghora trilogy, the Aghori Vimalananda uses the backdrop of the Bombay racetrack as a potent metaphor for the ultimate game of life, where destinies and fortunes are won or lost on the momentary edge of the finishing line.

Weaving all the characters favorites and outsiders, jockeys and trainers, owners and 'rail-birds' into the field of karma, Vimalananda masterfully entwines the external reality of the racecourse with the subtle internal reality of creative spirituality.

Hidden within the form of every sliding moment are the infinite tracks of destiny and the profound and underlying philosophical truths they reveal. Emphasized is the intertwining of relationships (rnanubandhana - the bondage of karmic debt) which perpetuates itself until recognized.

An enlightening window into the seemingly endless cycles of death, rebirth and the intertwinning of relationships which revolve around the universal laws of cause and effect. In depth and consummate.

Reviews:

I was tremendously impressed by the account of a truly remarkable Tantric teacher of the most extreme type. Required reading for anyone interested in knowing and experiencing Tantra. - Nik Douglas, noted Tantric author and photographer.

Often even a sentence or two will shed more significant light on profound states of consciousness or very complex stages of meditation than the reader is likely to find in whole volumes intended to illume the same subjects. - Robert Masters, Ph.D.

These books are bracing in their cheerful, unabashed frankness. - Roger Taylor, Yoga Journal.

This book could easily be retitled Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Karma or Could Ever Think of Asking. This is a book for those seriously seeking to understand the traditions and beliefs that mystics have spent lifetimes trying to master. - From Los Angeles' Bodhi Tree Bookstore review

Book Name - Sushruta Samhita: An English Translation based on original Sanskrit Texts (In 3 Volumes)

Author - Kaviraj Kunja lal bhishagratna

The Practice of surgery has been recorded in India around 800 B. C. This need not come as a surprise because surgery (Shastrakarma) is one of the eight branches of Ayurveda the ancient Indian System of medicine. The oldest Samhita ( Shushuta’s compendium). Sushruta Samhita is the only complete book we have which deals with the problems of practical surgery and midwifery. Shushruta was one of the first to study the human anatomy. In the Shusruta Samhita he has described in detail the study of anatomy. Shusruta’s forte was rhinoplasty (Plastic surgery) and ophthalmology (ejection of cataracts).

Shushruta has described surgery under eight heads Chedya (excision), Lekhya (scarification), Vedhya (puncturing), Esya (exploration), Ahrya (extraction), Vsraya (evacuation) and Sivya (Suturing). Perhaps the greatest contribution of Shushruta was the operation of rhinoplasty (restoration of a multilated nose by plastic survey). The detailed description of the rhinoplasty operation in the Shusurta Samhita is amazingly meticulous and comprehensive. These is evidence to show that his success in this kind of surgery was very high, which attracted people from all over the country and perhaps even from outside.

Shushruta moved by his intense humane approach to life and equipped with superb surgical skills, elevated the art of surgery to the status of a practical science. The details of the steps of this operation, as recorded in the Shushruta Samhita, are amazingly similar to the steps that are followed even to-day in such advanced plastic surgery.

Book Name - Tantric Yoga and the Wisdom Goddesses: Spiritual Secrets of Ayurveda

Author - David Frawley

Tantric Yoga and the Wisdom Goddesses is an excellent book introducing the essence of Hindu Tantrism. the book discusses all the major concepts and offers valuable corrections for many existing misconceptions. It also introduces the reader to the core Tantric practices of meditation and mantra recitation, focusing on the Ten Wisdom Goddesses (dasa-mahavidya).

This book presents the meditational and mantric side of Tantra, which is the more common side of Tantra practiced in India. It is written from the standpoint of a practitioner and also from one trained in Ayurveda (yogic medicine). It tries to present the living spirit and practice of Tantra, rather than just another academic view. The book is divided into three primary sections; with the fourth as an Appendix.

This text acts as an introduction to the essence of Hindu Tantrism. It introduces the major concepts and offers corrections for many misconceptions. The reader will learn of the ten wisdom goddesses and core Tantric practices, such as meditation and mantra recitation.

David Frawley has done a fine exposition of Hindu Tantra. He not only knows the subject well, but he also can convey it in a readable and lucid manner. He clears away many of the misconceptions that have risen around Tantra since the New Age movement has appropriated it. Its not about "sex" as many purveyors would want you to believe. Most westerners think that the 'Left hand Tantra' is all there is. Wrong. It is a authentic and very real path of spritual realization that is very comprehensive in its practice.

About the Author:

David Frawley is one of the few Westerners recognized in India as a Vedacharya or teacher of the ancient Vedic wisdom. He is the author of numerous books and articles on Vedic topics including Ayurveda, Vedic Astrology, Vedanta, Hinduism, Yoga and Tantra, as well as translations and interpretations from the Vedas.

Reviews:

"It tries to present the living spirit and practice of Tantra, rather than just another academic view." - Mystic India

"Tantric Yoga and the Wisdom Goddesses is an excellent introduction to the essence of Hindu Tantrism. The author discusses all the major concepts and offers valuable corrections for many existing misconceptions. He also introduces the reader to the core Tantric practices of meditation and mantra recitation, focusing on the Ten Wisdom Goddesses." - Georg Feuerstein

"After Frawley dispels the misconceptions he proceeds to define aspects of Tantra and the various paths within it. Then the bulk of the book deals with the Ten Mahavidyas or wisdom goddesses. Now some of them are really hideous or nightmarish visually. Be forwarned! 5 of the goddesses comprise each an aspect of the divine as I understand it. The other 5 deal with personal transformation. He gives instructions on how to worship each one, along with mantras and yantras, with visualizations of each goddess. Later chapters deal with the chakras, pranas, tejas and ojas. Overall a fine introduction to Tantra.I have only a few quips.

1) It is not a instruction manual per se. Yes he lists the various mantras - however its nearly impossible to learn a mantra from a book. A audio CD would be a fine complement for the next edition. Get Harish 'Tools for Tantra' for the practice methods.

2) The Yantras and drawings of the goddess should be done in color. If you're interested in knowing more about real Tantra get this book. You won't be disapointed."

Book Name - Yoga and Ayurveda

Author - David Frawley

Yoga is one of the most extraordinary spiritual sciences that mankind has ever discovered. It is like a gem of great proportions, containing many facets whose light can illumine the whole of our lives with great meaning. Going back over five thousand years, it is one of the few spiritual traditions that has maintained an unbroken development throughout history. Comprehending all aspects of the human being and the world of nature, it can unfold all the higher powers that are accessible to us both internally and externally.

Yogic methods cover the entire field of our existence — from the physical, sensory, emotional, mental, and spiritual to the highest Self-realization. It includes all methods of higher evolution in humanity — physical postures, ethical disciplines, breath control, sensory methods, affirmations and visualizations, prayer and mantra, and complex meditative disciplines. Yoga understands the nature and interrelationship of the physical, subtle and formless universes into the boundless infinite beyond time and space, and shows us how these also exist within each human individual.

Yoga is the fruit of the teachings of the Himalayan sages, going back to what yogis regard as the beginning of this particular world age or cycle of civilization some ten thousand years ago. It is said to carry on the traditions of earlier, spiritually advanced teachings which present civilizations have forgotten. Yoga is a distillation of wisdom from the myriad of sages throughout the ages, the ongoing legacy of the spiritual urge of humanity, as adapted to the particular requirements of each age and each person. It is like a wide and luxurious banyan tree spreading out our higher potentials and giving them strength and nourishment.

Like yoga, with which it has grown, Ayurveda possesses a long history with many layers, much diversity and a continuous development that makes it relevant for all people and all times. Ayurveda is one of the most remarkable holistic medical systems in the world. It covers all aspects of health and well-being — physical, emotional, mental and spiritual. It includes all methods of healing from diet, herbs, exercise and lifestyle regimens to yogic practices and meditation. With its unique understanding of individual constitution, Ayurveda provides the insight for each person and each culture to create a way of life in harmony both with the world of nature and our higher Self. It offers optimal health and development for all creatures by its profound understanding of natural law.

Following in the footsteps of yoga, which already has a worldwide presence, Ayurveda is emerging as one of the most important global systems of mind-body medicine. It shows us how to understand the language of nature, the language of life, so that we can live in harmony with the greater universe, not evolving only for ourselves but bringing benefit to all creatures. Ayurveda contains the secrets not only for healing the individual but also for uplifting society, all creatures and the planet itself.

Yoga and Ayurveda are sister sciences that developed together and repeatedly influenced each other throughout history. They are integral parts of the great system of Vedic knowledge which states that all the universe is One Self and that the key to cosmic knowledge lies within our own minds and hearts. As Vedic disciplines, yoga and Ayurveda work together to enhance their great benefits on all levels. They can be integrated with related Vedic or yogic sciences of astrology, architecture, music and language for an even broader approach.

Yoga is first and foremost a science of Self-realization. Its concern is spiritual practice, mainly through meditation, to take us beyond the sorrow and ignorance of the world. It teaches us how to move from our outer bodily and ego-bound identity to our immortal Self that dwells within the heart. Yoga provides the key to all spiritual development, which in the Vedic sense is gaining knowledge of our true nature beyond time, space, death and suffering

Ayurveda is primarily a science of Self-healing aimed at relieving the diseases of body and mind. This does not mean that Ayurveda is merely a method of personal healing which doesn't require help from therapists or doctors. In fact, Ayurveda says that medical practitioners are indispensable in dealing with the complexities of disease and the variabilities of health requirements. Ayurveda as Self-healing means that it is concerned with restoring wholeness, with our inner Self as its ultimate goal, which is spiritual healing.

Ayurveda's concern is alleviating both bodily and mental diseases and promoting both physical and psychological well-being. Yet the ultimate goal of classical Ayurveda, like classical yoga, is Self-realization — the highest form of Self-healing. Ayurveda shows us how to attain optimal health not for outer enjoyment but to provide a wholesome foundation and sufficient energy to pursue the yogic quest.

The link between yoga and Ayurveda is prana, or the life-force. Yoga is the intelligence of prana seeking greater evolutionary transformations, while Ayurveda is its healing power, seeking to consolidate the life-systems it has already developed. Together, Ayurveda and yoga afford a complete discipline, one which can transform our existence from the physical to the deepest spiritual levels of our being with extraordinary vitality and creativity on all levels.

Review:

"Yoga and Ayurveda together form a complete approach for optimal health, vitality and higher awareness. 'Yoga and Ayurveda' reveals to us the secret powers of thebody, breath, senses, mind and chakras. More importantly, it unfoldstransformational methods to work on them through diet, herbs, asana, pranayamaand meditation. This is the first book published in the West on these twoextraordinary subjects and their interface. It has the power to change thelives of those who read and apply it."

Book Name - Massage Therapy for Diseases of Vital Areas: Marma Treatment

Author - S.V. Govindan

In Ayurveda Marmas are mentioned. Susruta Samhita deals with Marmas elaborately. Those who practise Ayurvedic Massage should have the general knowledge about Marmas. Now-a-days the Acharyas of Kalari Payattu (Martial Aart) know the Marmas and the Marma treatment.

By massage Marmas are protected and also activated. Some diseases can be treated or controlled by activating the Marmas. There are 19 Marmas which are damaged. The prognosis is sudden death due to diminution of fire of the body. So those Marmas should be well protected. Vishalyaghna Marmas (3) are also very difficult to treat if anything is stuck on those points because by removing the foreign matter from the body the wound causes the air to escape and the contact with the Marma is lost.

In olden days the Ayurvedic doctors had the knowledge of some Marma poionts where they used to press and the patient became unconscioius and the surgery was done. After the operation another Marma point was pressed and the patient regained his consciousness. If any Marma is damaged the body gets some trouble. If Marmas are well activated some diseases can be cured, it is well mentioned in this book.

Book Name - Ayurvedic Astrology

Author - David Frawley

Ayurvedic Medicine represents the healing branch of yogic science, while Vedic astrology provides its understanding of time and karma. Ayurvedic astrology teaches the interface of these two extraordinary systems in the Vedic astrology of healing. The book explains how the different mind-body and planetary types of the two systems interrelate. It examines disease factors from an astrological perspective and goes in depth into astrological remedial measures, particularly gem therapy. It also contains many notable example charts.

This is probably the first book available that jointly examines both Ayurveda and Vedic astrology in detail for the modern reader. Even in the traditional literature on these subjects, there are few works that cross reference both so directly and completely. It is likely to be the standard work in the field for serious students for years to come.

For a Blissfull Baby is an Ayurvedic guide to having a baby and gives beautiful, practical, ancient insights into the entire process of bringing a child into this world.

An indispensable guide filled with practical tips for expectant and new mothers. Includes diet, exercise, daily routine, and massage instructions and holistic principles that enliven Nature's intelligence. Easy-to-read style geared for busy moms.

Review:

"We all know how important rest is during pregnancy but if you ever had any doubts on what is the best way to get that rest, read this book. I meditated 2 hours daily throughout my pregnancy and the entire 9 months and birth were effortless and so happy. Some of the recommendations in the book I ignored (like the modified demand feeding of your baby after 2 weeks) but the most important recommmendation - learn and practice Transcendental Meditation - is the best advice I could give any expecting mother. This book is filled with convincing scientific studies if you are hesitant." - Review from Toronto, Canada

Book Name - Prakruti - Your Ayurvedic Constitution

Author - Robert E. Svoboda

This book is based on Ayurveda, the ancient healing science of India, by a Westerner first ever to obtain a degree in Ayurveda. It is meant to reintroduce modern man to 'walking with naked feet' through life to come back into contact with Nature. Although centuries old the concept of individual constitution is a new concept for the modern mind, a new way for all of us to understand our 'relationship' with nature. Ayurveda is above all meant for all people who by harmonizing themselves seek to act as harmonizing forces in the universe.

Ayurveda is the product of a civilisation which is deeply rooted in Mother Nature. Through this book we can overcome the Nature's ire and restore to vitality of natural health by shunning overweening, arrogant passion for self-indulgence. Nature is part of the individual, since we all are created from, exist in, and return to nature. Nature is always magnanimous, and She will be as generous to you as you are generous to yourself and to other beings. You cannot buy, beg, borrow, or steal health; it is Nature's gift to you. Actually all of us have a Mother in Nature and only She can lead us to happier and healthier life.

About the Author:

Robert E. Svoboda graduated from the Tilak Ayurvedic College of the University of Poona in 1980 as the first and the only Westerner ever to become a licensed Ayurvedic physician. He is on the staff of the Ayurvedic Institute in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and divides his time principally between North America, Hawaii and India. In India, where he has lived for more than a dozen years, he continues his research into Ayurveda and other ancient sciences. Since then he has travelled extensively, lecturing and conducting.

He is the author of several magazine and journal articles, of the Ayurvedic Home Study Course; The Hidden Secret of Ayurveda and Aghora: At the Left Hand of God.

Review:

Excellent introduction to the field of Ayurveda, with special emphasis on the constitutions. Dr. Robert Svoboda is the first and thus far the only Westernerever to obtain a degree in Ayurveda. He graduated from the Tilak AyurvedaCollege, where Dr. Vasant Lad was one of his professors, in Poona, India, in1980. Since that time he has travelled extensively in the U.S. and Canada, lecturing and conducting workshops on the subject.

This is a three volume set:

Vol. I Sutra Sthana & Sarira Sthana

Ashtangahridaya of Vagbhata is an ancient authoritative treatise on Ayurveda. Its popularity extended beyond the frontiers of India for more than a thousand years substantiated by its translation in Arabic, Tibetan and some European languages. None of these are available now.

Vol. VII. Sloka-Index.

The Caraka Samhita occupies a very important place in the history of world’s medical science. But this work is quit difficult to understand to those who are not well accustomed with the particular style of Sanskrit in which it is written. Hence, an authentic translation was a desideratum.

The present translation is not only the result of painful labour of two renowned scholars, but it comprises valuable extracts from the famous commentary of Cakrapanidatta, rendered into English.

This is the most profound and most popular of the classical Ayurvedic texts. This is by far the finest ever expoundation of the text by the renowned Vaidya, Vaidya Bhagwan Dash. It is very insightfully written and translated and commentated on. It covers the complete medical wisdom of the Vedic era with profound understandings of illness and remedies, diet, regimens, lifestyle, the effects of various activities, how to live a good and rightous life. Indeed it is one of the most profound medical and scientific texts ever written. There is much scope for further exploration, for self-inquiry for medical insights into diseases yet "understood" by modern science.
